- Wine Making Special Interest Group
Winemakers represent an important subgroup within LWGA with interests and needs that are separate from winegrowing. To help serve these members we are kicking off a winemaking group. This group will be moderated by Bill English and David Hicks. This is not intended to be a lecture series, but rather an opportunity for LWGA’s winemakers and would-be wine makers can get together and share information. We anticipate doing this through a combination of in-person meetings and the on-line forum which was recently created where you can discuss winemaking methods and get questions answered. Perhaps we can take some field trips too. The mix of meeting approaches and topics is totally up to the group.
We would like to start with a show of hands to see who is interested. Send an email to let us know of your interest to billeng81@gmail.com. We think it would be good to start with an in person organizational meeting either at someone’s home or at a local establishment to discuss how often to meet in person, topics, and potential field trips. We view this as a place to start and it is ok to morph the format over time.
Are you interested? Shoot an email to Bill English.

Hi Bill. I would definitely like learn winemaking. I’m also going to ask, if anyone would like help with harvest, in exchange for teaching me how and maybe a little of the juice to practice winemaking. maybe each person in the winemaking could practice winemaking a small amount using a juice. Cheers Dave

Hi David, 13 years ago I received Warlock’s book as a Christmas gift. Best gift ever. Still use it to this day. Strongly second Bill English recommendation to use this book to start. Not aware of you status re equipment but the closest wine making supply stores are More wine in Concord and Wine Barrel in Berkeley. Between the stores and the book you can at least get started. I have already started harvesting and Bill E will start soon as will the rest of the CCC world. Our association just formed our winemaking consulting volunteers forums for members this Summer and the best advice I can give to you and everyone else who wishes to take advantage of what we can share is to begin in the early Spring contacting any one of us and begin planning and/or learning what to do way before harvest. Best wishes this year. David Hicks
