Hello fellow LWGA members,
On January 27th, 2019 LWGA held its annual general meeting at the Hacienda De las Flores in the fire side room and adjacent meeting room between 3 – 6 PM. Many members brought wonderful appetizers and wine to share for the meeting.
The General meeting began at 4 PM after socializing, Candidates for the board, Leslie Ward, Daniel Howsepian; David Hicks and Tim Wedlake; made a short talk about their history and how they could help the board in the coming years. This was followed by a very interesting and engaging panel discussion centering around “managing your vineyard manager”, moderated by David Rey. On the panel were Leslie Ward representing as a vineyard owner; Bill Scanlin, representing as a winemaker; and the father and son owners ( Bryan & Dylan Rahn, of CVC ( Coastal Viticulture Consultants) ,
- The discussion followed the handout which addresses what happens in the vineyard over the course of the year. Specifically, what gets done, who typically does it when you have a vineyard manager and who is involved in the decision making.
- The goal was to facilitate the kind of collaboration between the grower, the vineyard manager and the winemaker that is conducive to a successful crop in terms of yield and quality.
Some of the topics discussed were irrigation practices; fertilization; canopy management; pruning practices and many other items which prompted a high level of discussion and questions and answers. Many of these topics will be revisited and expanded in future meetings. A very informative spreadsheet on vineyard management guidelines, used for the panel discussion, and an actual annual vineyard management cost analysis was shared with the group. Many felt the discussion could have gone much longer!
Right after the panel discussion, a survey was handed out to the members to solicit their feelings about the activities of the LWGA and suggestions.
It was a very interesting and informative meeting and we hope to see you all at the next meeting where the members will enjoy a member’s wine rating session of our local wines and follow-up discussions on the process (grape growing/wine making) which made their wine so good.
LWGA Board
Is it possible to get the handout or summary of the meeting?
I was not able to attend (granddaughter’s birthday party) and it sounds like information I sorely need.
Thanks,
Frank
