Next LWGA Meeting: Better Grape Growing, and Host Needed

Happy New Year, people of grapes and wine!
The next LWGA meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 27, 3pm to 6pm. The meeting topic will be on how owners can better manage their vineyard manager and things to check throughout the year to ensure a successful harvest. We will be reviewing all major vineyard tasks and will provide handouts outlining the types of things that owners should watch to ensure better and larger harvests, each year. We will also be hosting a panel of viticulturists for a question and answer session. This will be an interesting and helpful meeting, particularly if your vineyard has not been producing consistent quality fruit.
We are seeking a host for this meeting. We anticipate approximately 40 attendees. Please respond to Gerard van Steyn at gerardvs1@gmail.com, if you host this meeting.

Successful Holiday Party, and More

Dear fellow growers and winemakers,

For those who attended, it was a pleasure to celebrate the season with you, for those who were not able to attend, we had a very celebratory evening with many members and quite a number of the community!! We had many local wines presented to the public plus, Music with Diamond Dave was fantastic and the food was great!!  Each received a LWGA glass to take home too!  what a deal….

Now that we are coming close to the end of the year two things we need to do:

1-  Please email susan@captainvineyards.com, the amount of grapes you harvested in 2018, we would like to add the total tonnage of  Lamorinda AVA grapes, to be included in the Contra Costa County crop report.

2-   Selecting the team that will Manage your vineyard in 2019.  We for sure, recommend that the vineyard management  team will be using best sustainable practices.  Using sustainable practices is part of LWGA’s mission.  We encourage you to talk with your vineyard managers and ask them to adhere, as best as possible, to these practices, it is good for us, our community, environment and we believe it is economically viable to do so.   Below is a team that you might want to reach out to for your 2019 vineyard management.  They manage around 14 vineyards in the Lamorinda Area.

Next LWGA Meeting – Sunday, September 30 – Red Wine Winners and Winemaking Advice

Hello Lamorinda Winegrowers, Winemakers and Merry Wine Folk! By now most everyone is probably busy with harvest, planning for harvest, or planning to drink harvest wines in the future.

On this topic of wine, wine work and wine fun, the next LWGA meeting will be Sunday, September 30, 3pm to 6pm at Larry and Esther Thal’s residence 1155 Laurel Drive, Lafayette. (directions are at the end of this email)

This will be a fun and informative meeting. Some of the red wine winners from our AVA Celebration earlier this year will be pouring samples of their winning wines and explaining how the wine was made. Bring any and all questions you have about winemaking to this meeting, as our winning wine makers will have valuable answers, suggestions and opinions – and the meeting will be structured to encourage open dialogue, so other winemakers can provide their suggestions as well.

Please bring a bottle of wine, a wine glass or two (for tasting multiple wines) and an appetizer or light entrée to the September 30th meeting.

Also mark your calendars for our Annual Lamorinda Winegrowers Holiday Party, which will be on Thursday, December 6, 2018 in the evening. This will be a real deal festive party, so you won’t to miss it!

Looking forward, our next meeting will be on Sunday, January 27, 3pm to 6pm. At this meeting we will be discussing viticulture and sharing information that may help improve the quality or quantity of your fruit.

DIRECTIONS TO THE THALS’, 1155 LAUREL DRIVE, LAFAYETTE (925) 283-7434

From San Francisco or the East Bay, take Highway 24 East toward Walnut Creek through the Caldecott Tunnel. Take the Central Lafayette/Oak Hill Road exit (the sixth exit after the Caldecott Tunnel). At the bottom of the Central Lafayette exit, take a left onto Oak Hill Road and go back under the freeway. At the top of the hill is a yield sign; turn right onto Deer Hill. At the second intersection is a stop light. Going right puts you back on Highway 24 going West; left is Laurel Drive. Turn left. We are at the top of the hill. The entrance to the house is approximately two-fifths of a mile after you turn onto Laurel. The entrance is gated. Push the intercom button on the left side of the gate. Go to the top of the driveway, after bearing to the left — you’ll find plenty of parking between the two garages.

From Sacramento or San Jose take Highway 680 toward Walnut Creek and then Highway 24 West toward Lafayette/Oakland. Take the Central Lafayette exit (the second exit after Highway 680). At the stoplight is Laurel Drive. Go straight.

Got Varmints Feasting on Your Precious Grapes?

Raccoons in particular are such a problem because so many live in our area and the crafty little buggers can untie netting or reach through to consume a crazy amount of grapes. One LWGA member even reports that after a full meal of grapes, local raccoons then went for a swim and wash in their pool!
One fairly simple and inexpensive way to prevent raccoons and other animals from eating your grapes is an electric fence. Members who are using an electric fence report very good success. I started using a portable fence this year, and it very effectively stoppeed local raccoons that were eating my grapes and tree fruit. I used portable plastic fence posts so it is very easy to setup and move.
Amazon and other vendors have many options. The electric fence charger can be even be solar powered. Also, I just learned from Daniel H. that if you add a timer to the system it will only be on during the night, so you and your pets will be less likely to get shocked!
Here are some examples for getting a system:
Example charger.. many options out there, some with lights to show power, and portable solar as well

or insulators for fence
